Avalon, NSW – 2107
Avalon is a northern beachside suburb of Sydney, located 35 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Pittwater Council, in the Northern Beaches region.
History
The area was previously known as ‘Preist’s Flat’, after Father John Jospeh Therry , who built a church there in the 1800s. In 1921 the land was subdivided and the name Avalon was chosen. It is alleged that Avalon is named after an island in Celtic mythology, said to be the final resting place of King Arthur.
Transport Links
Avalon is situated on Barrenjoey Road, with a short drive onto Pittwater Road, a major arterial road in the Northern Beaches, which provides excellent road links by both car and bus.
Shopping and Recreation
Avalon has a good selection of shops, including a supermarket, plenty of cafes and a cinema. There are also bowling and sailing clubs, as well as Avalon Soccer Club and Avalon Junior Rugby League Club. The picturesque Avalon Beach is popular with swimmers and surfers, and was once used for filming by the American television show ‘Baywatch’ in the 1990s. Avalon also has a 9 hole golf course.
