Living in Bellevue Hill
Bellevue Hill is an Eastern Suburb of Sydney, located 5 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Municipality of Woollahra.
History
In the early 1800s, Irish-Australian immigrants referred to the area as Vinegar Hill, after the Battle of Vinegar Hill, an engagement during the 1798 uprising of the United Irishmen in south-east Ireland. Governor Lachlan Macquarie took great exception to this and decided to name the suburb Bellevue Hill, meaning ‘beautiful view’ in French. Today, Bellevue Hill features many houses on the Register of National Estate, and is known as one of Sydney’s wealthiest suburbs.
Transport Links
A 5 minute drive along the expressway or a more scenic journey via the harbour route will have you in the City in no time, although buses are regular too, as well as trains from neighbouring Bondi Junction.
Shopping and Recreation
The local shopping centre caters to daily needs as well as housing a few small boutiques, however the serious shoppers can enjoy a quick walk to Double Bay with its larger range of shops. Cooper Park provides excellent facilities for cricket, soccer, barbecues and a children’s play area, as well as walking and jogging tracks.
Schools
Bellevue Hill is home to Bellevue Hill Primary School, as well as the highly exclusive Scots College. A short drive away are a number of equally prestigious schools including Sydney Grammar, Cranbrook and Waverly College.
