Birchgrove, NSW – 2041
Birchgrove is a suburb in the inner-west of Sydney, located 5 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Municipality of Leichhardt. Birchgrove is located on the north-west slope of the Balmain peninsula, overlooking Sydney Harbour.
History
Birchgrove was named after Birchgrove House, built by Lieutenant John Birch, paymaster of the 73rd regiment, in 1812. It is said heĀ added ‘grove’ to his surname when naming the house because of the large number of orange trees growing on the original site.
Transport Links
Birchgrove Wharf connects to Circular Quay via the Inner Harbour Ferry Services and the area is well served with buses into the City and CBD.
Recreation and Schools
Ballast Point and Yurulbin Park provide residents with green open spaces in which to relax, and the annual Balmain Regatta, run by the Balmain Sailing Club, is held in Birchgrove. Neighbouring Balmain is home to the Montessori School, Sydney College of the Arts and Balmain High and Primary Schools.
