Bondi Junction is an Eastern Suburb of Sydney, located 6 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the Waverley.
History
Bondi is an Aboriginal word meaning water breaking over rocks. As trams became popular, the lines were extended and the term Bondi Junction was coined. It referred to the junction of the Bondi and Bronte tram lines at the corner of the now Oxford Street and Bronte Road.
Transport Links
Bondi Junction railway station is the eastern terminus of the Eastern Suburbs railway on the CityRail system and provides quick access into the City and CBD. A bus interchange is located at ground level.
Shopping and Recreation
Bondi Junction is one of the major shopping areas in the Eastern Suburbs, with Bondi Junction Plaza and Eastgate shopping centres. The suburb is also central for a wide variety of sports and recreational facilities, with Centennial Park, Bondi Beach, Royal Sydney Golf Course, Randwick Racecourse and Moore Park all close at hand. There is also a bowling club, squash courts, swimming pools and cinemas to be found here, not to mention a vast selection of dining options including food from all corners of the world as well as a good selection of modern Australian cuisine.
