Cammeray is a suburb on the lower North Shore of Sydney, located 5 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of North Sydney Council.

History

Cammeray is named after the Cammeraygal, the Aboriginal tribe who once resided in the North Sydney area and was Sydney’s first quarry, with sandstone blocks from the quarry making many of the first buildings in Sydney town.

Cammeray is mostly a residential area, with some houses have waterfront access such as those in the streets leading down to Folly Point.

Transport Links

The suburb is located on many bus routes with Sydney CBD being only 10 minutes ride away, and is easily accessed from the Warringah Freeway and Bradfield Highway, and North Sydney and St Leonards train stations are easily accessible with connections all over and beyond Greater Sydney.

Shopping and Recreation

There is a large selection of restaurants, including Thai, Chinese and Indian cuisine, and the Green Park shopping area boasts a range of shops and small businesses. Cammeray is also well equipped with a selection of recreational and sporting facilities, including the Cammeray Cricket Club and Cammeray Golf Club, both rugby union and league clubs, and a boat ramp allowing small boats to enter Middle Harbour. Tunks Park is a popular spot for joggers and dog walkers, and also provides the suburb with sporting fields for cricket in the summer months and soccer and rugby in the winter.

Schools and Institutions

Cammeray is ideally located for a range of schools, including Cammeray Public School, North Sydney Boy’s High School and Greenwich Public School all being close by, as well as Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE (Crows Nest College) being situated in this area. The Royal North Shore Hospital is located less than 2km away.
