Camperdown is an inner-city suburb of Sydney, located 4 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district and is part of the Inner West region. Camperdown lies across the local government areas of the City of Sydney and Marrickville Council.

History

The area was named by William Bligh after The Battle of Camperdown, in Holland, when he acquired a land grant of 420 acres there. The area was established as a farming and residential area and in 1827 a racecourse was opened there.

Institutions

A large part of the suburb is taken up with the University of Sydney and the residential colleges therein. The Royal Prince Albert Hospital can also be found here as well as the historic Camperdown Cemetery.
