Living in Erskineville
Erskineville is an inner-city suburb of Sydney, located about 3 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney. Erskineville is informally part of the region of the Inner West, but is also more correctly considered to be part of the Inner City because of its proximity to the city.
History
The suburb is so named after Erskine Villa, a house built by the Reverend George Erskine in the 1800s. The suburb was mainly industrialised with brick making and boot making, although the industrial buildings have recently been redeveloped to make way for residential dwellings.
Transport Links
The area is well served by buses along King Street although the fastest route into the City and CBD is by rail from Erskineville Station on the Bankstown Line.
Shopping and Recreation
Near the train station is a small selection of local shops, cafes and pubs, although the diverse choice of neighbouring King Street will keep you busy all day. The Police Boys Club offers people the chance to try their hand at boxing, or for something altogether more relaxing, the pool in Victoria Park is a short walk away.
School and Institutions
Erskineville Public and St Mary's Catholic School can be found in the suburb, however nearby you’ll find Sydney University, Newington College, Trinity College and state high schools.
