Heathcote, NSW – 2233
Heathcote is a suburb, in southern Sydney, located 36 km south of the Sydney central business district in the Sutherland Shire. It is bounded by The Royal National Park to the east and Heathcote National Park to the west.
History
In 1835 Surveyor-General Sir Thomas Mitchell (1792-1855) conducted a survey of the area and named it Heathcote, in honour of an officer who had fought with him during the Peninsula Wars against Napoleon.
Transport Links
Heathcote railway station is on the City Rail Illawarra line. Heathcote Road meets the Princes Highway at Heathcote, and is a major link to the north western suburbs, while the Princes Highway links Sydney and Wollongong.
Shopping and Recreation
Shops and cafes can be found near the railway station, with the western side of the track a mainly residential area. Heathcote is home to a sporting oval, a camping ground and training centre for the South Metropolitan Scouts Association. There is also a popular bushwalk between Heathcote and the adjacent area of Waterfall, which takes walkers through the bushland of Heathcote National Park.
