Living in Kensington
Kensington is a suburb in south-eastern Sydney, located 6 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Randwick, in the Eastern Suburbs region. Kensington lies to the immediate south of Moore Park and west of Randwick Racecourse.
History
Kensington was named after the London suburb with hopes that it would reach the high social stature of its English namesake. Kensington Racecourse was opened in 1893 and was later used to house troops during World War I, however the land was resumed in 1950 to build Sydney’s second university- and the University of New South Wales stands there today.
Transport Links
Kensington is well linked by road, with Anzac Parade running centrally. Buses provide a quick and frequent service to both the City and surrounding suburbs.
Shopping and Recreation
The suburb has a handful of cafes and restaurants, with a shopping strip stretching along Anzac Parade. Randwick Racecourse and Centennial Park are nearby and the larger shopping suburb of Randwick is just a short distance away.
Schools
Kensington Public School, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart College and Our Lady of the Rosary Primary School can be found here, as well as The University of New South Wales, and The National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA).
