Miranda is a suburb in southern Sydney, located 24 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district, in the Sutherland Shire.

History

James Murphy, the manager of the Holt estate named the area after Miranda, a character in the William Shakespeare play The Tempest, in the 1880s. The area was well established as a fruit growing area until residential development took over with the arrival of the steam trams.

Transport Links

Miranda railway station is on the Cronulla branch of the Illawarra line on the CityRail network and numerous bus companies operate services in the area.

Shopping and Recreation

There is a large Westfield Shopping Centre at Miranda, with other strips of local shops elsewhere in the suburb. Seymour Shaw Park is a beautiful place to get out and about.

Schools

Port Hacking High School, Miranda Public School, Miranda North Primary School and Our Lady Star of the Sea School are just a few of the schools to be found in the area.
