Mosman is a suburb on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, located 8 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre for the local government area of the Municipality of Mosman.

History

Mosman is named after Archibald Mosman (1799–1863) and his twin brother George, who moved onto a 4-acre (16,000 m2) land grant in the area in 1831. They were involved in shipping, and founded a whaling station on a bay in the harbour, which became known as Mosman’s Bay.

Transport Links

Reaching the CBD is easy via the bridge or Harbour tunnel, and the area is also well served with buses. The ferry from Mosman Bay to the City is a quick and pleasant trip if you live near the harbour.

Shopping and Recreation

Mosman shopping centre is located along Military Road, which features many boutiques, cafes and restaurants and is home to many fine homeware stores. Mosman Square hosts a large market on the first Saturday of each month. Mosman is also home to the famous Taronga Zoo and a selection walking tracks through the beautiful Sydney Harbour National Park.

Schools

A large selection of schools is available in Mosman and surrounding suburbs, with a good number of pre-school and day care facilities. Mosman’s close proximity to the schools of nearby North Sydney and Neutral Bay make this suburb very family friendly.
