Living in Palm Beach

Palm Beach is a northern beachside suburb of Sydney, located 41 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Pittwater Council, in the Northern Beaches region. Palm Beach sits on a peninsula at the end of Barrenjoey Road, between Pittwater and Broken Bay.

History

During the 19th century the area was inhabited by Europeans and Chinese who caught and dried fish, and in 1816 400 acres of land there was granted to James Napper. The area is named after the abundance of cabbage tree palms which grow there.

Transport Links

Sydney Buses operate services to Palm beach, and the area is accessed along Barrenjoey Road. Palm Beach Water Airport operates seaplane services to Rose bay in the Eastern Suburbs, Cottage Point in the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park, and Berowra Waters. The Palm Beach Ferry also operates between Palm Beach and several destinations along the coast, including Ettalong, Coasters Retreat and The Basin.

Recreation, Facilities and Schools

Palm Beach is often recognised as the summer playground of the rich and famous, with its gorgeous beaches, parks and one of Sydney’s largest surf clubs. Palm Beach is used for exterior filming of soap opera Home and Away, as the fictional town of Summer Bay, and its iconic status amongst the Sydney beach culture is a big draw for many people. There is a large RSL club here and a number of great cafes, restaurants and bed and breakfasts. There is also a golf club, sailing club, surf school and the Careel Bay Ovals Sporting Complex, with facilities for rugby, soccer and tennis. Neighbouring suburbs provide Palm Beach with a great selection of schools for all ages, and a larger range of fantastic shopping facilities.
