Petersham is a suburb in the Inner West of Sydney, located 6 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Marrickville Council.

History

In 1793 Major Francis Grose ordered the area, which he named after his birthplace in England, to be cleared to allow for farming of corn and wheat. Crops thrived here and farming continued here until the arrival of the railway line in 1857, when much of the land was sold and subdivided for residential development.

Transport Links

Petersham railway station is on the Inner West line of the CityRail network and the area is well serviced by buses.

Shopping and Recreation

A small row of shops lines New Canterbury Road and extends down Audley Street towards the railway station serving residents with daily needs, as well as fabulous speciality Portugese produce, although more shopping facilities can be found in nearby Marrickville and Leichhardt. Petersham Park is a great spot for a jog or cycle, and Fanny Durack Pool is heated in cold weather.

Schools

Petersham is home to a great selection of day care and child care facilities, as well as Petersham Public, Fort Street High and a campus of Sydney TAFE.
