Living in Redfern

Redfern is an inner-city suburb of Sydney. Redfern is 3 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney. Strawberry Hills is a locality on the border with Surry Hills.

History

The suburb is named after surgeon William Redfern, who was granted 100 acres of land in this area in 1817 by Lachlan Macquarie.

Transport Links

The area is well served by buses and trains to Redfern Railway Station, which is the first station south of the Central Sydney terminus. The station is also popular with students as it is the closest station to the University of Sydney’s Camperdown campus.

Shopping, Recreation and Schools

There is a shopping strip located near the railway station. Redfern Park provides a leafy, outdoor space for walking, jogging or cycling. Sydney Boys High School, SCEGGS, Sydney Grammar School and Crown Street Public School can all be found in the vicinity of Redfern.
