Russell Lea is a small suburb in the inner-west of Sydney, located 8 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the City of Canada Bay.

History

Russell Lea takes its name from one of its original settlers, Russell Barton, who was a pastoralist, mine owner and politician. He developed the ‘Russell Lea Estate’ on a 60-acre grant which stood firm until the land was sold and subdivided in 1913. The area grew popular for residential development with the advancement of transportation services in the area and around the Parramatta River.

The area is well served by buses and there is also a ferry service which can be accessed from either Chiswick or Abbotsford.

Shopping, Recreation and Schools

Russell Lea is a quiet and tranquil residential neighbourhood, with plenty of places for a peaceful walk or jog by the water. Nearby Drummoyne, Leichhardt and Balmain offer a great selection of sports and recreational facilities, shopping and schools.
