Living in Tempe
Tempe is a suburb in the inner west of Sydney, located 9 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Marrickville Council. Tempe sits on the northern bank of the Cooks River and is separated from Sydney Airport by the Alexandra Canal, also known as Sheas Creek. The Wolli Creek waterway also empties into the Cooks River near Tempe.
History
Alexander Brodie Spark built Tempe House here in 1836, named after the 'Vale of Tempe', a beautiful valley in ancient Greek legend set at the foot of Mount Olympus in Greece. The suburb which subsequently grew around the house takes its name from this.
Transport Links
The Princes Highway and Unwins Bridge Road both run through the suburb providing excellent road access towards the City. Tempe Railway Station has rail services on the Illawarra Line and East Hills Line, and buses running through Tempe head to Newtown and Circular Quay.
Shopping and Recreation
There is a shopping strip running along the Princes Highway which includes a newsagents, doctors, dentists and a pub and diner. The Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre is located close by for a wider selection of shopping facilities. The Newtown Jets Sports Club and the Cooks River Motor Boat Club are situated beside the Cooks River and the Tempe Recreation Reserve and Cahill Park provide plenty of open spaces for outdoor pursuits. There are also several golf clubs nearby.
Schools
Tempe Primary School can be found in the suburb, although a larger selection of primary and secondary educational institutions can be found in neighbouring suburbs.
