Living in The Rocks
The Rocks is an historic area of Sydney's city centre, located on the southern shore of Sydney Harbour, immediately north-west of the Sydney central business district. The precinct and its immediate surroundings are administered independently of the local government area of the City of Sydney, by a New South Wales state government statutory authority, the Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority. The Rocks area borders on the Bradfield Highway, leading to the Sydney Harbour Bridge, adjacent to Circular Quay.
History
The Rocks became established shortly after the colony's formation in 1788, and the area is so called because all the original buildings were mostly made of sandstone. Plans to tear down these buildings in the 1960s and rebuild modern, high density housing, caused much outcry from residents and after many years of protest from the locals, the original buildings remained in place and renovations were made.
Transport Links
The Rocks is a stone’s throw from Circular Quay, with its ferry services, bus terminal and train station, providing excellent transport links around the City and beyond.
Shopping, Recreation and Schools
The Rocks is home to a variety of shops, art galleries, cafes and large and historic pubs. The Museum of Contemporary Art can also be found here, and, as the area is popular with tourists, there are a number of harbourside and historical walks starting from, or passing through the area. The iconic location, situated almost underneath the harbour bridge allows for fantastic views. With the City on its doorstep, The Rocks is a perfect place for the endless entertainment, dining, shopping and schooling facilities Sydney has to offer.
