Living in Ultimo
Ultimo is an inner-city suburb of Sydney, located 2 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the City of Sydney. Broadway is a locality along the road of the same name, located along the border of the suburb of Ultimo.
History
The land was granted to Dr John Harris in 1803, and his estate there was named ‘Ultimo’, after a clerical error made in a legal case against him. Harris Street is named in his honour. The area was developed from farmland into industrial buildings in the early 20th century due to the areas close proximity to Darling Harbour, however, the factories were subsequently moved out to cheaper land further from the CBD, and the area was developed residentially, with many areas still going renovations to make way for apartment living.
Transport
On the opposite side of Broadway you will find Central Railway Station, and to the east of the suburb, Metro Light Rail and the Sydney monorail both have stations. The area is well served by buses travelling along Broadway.
Broadway, Shopping and Recreation
The Broadway Shopping Centre, The Powerhouse Museum, and the television and recording studios of ABC can all be found here. Wentworth Park can also be found in Ultimo, and is a large sporting facility used for rugby, soccer and greyhound racing.
Schools and Institutions
University of Technology Sydney, Sydney Institute of TAFE and the International Grammar School can all be found in Ultimo.
