Woollahra is a suburb in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, located 5 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Municipality of Woollahra. The Municipality of Woollahra takes its name from the suburb but its administrative centre is located in Double Bay.

History

Woollahra is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘camp’ or ‘meeting ground’ and  was adopted by Daniel Cooper (1821–1902), the first speaker of the legislative assembly of New South Wales, when he laid the foundations of Woollahra House in 1856. Coopers descendants help shape the suburb into the stylish and well maintained suburb it is today.

Transport Links

The suburb is well served by frequent buses along Oxford Street and Edgecliff Road, and the train station at Edgecliff is just a short walk away.

Recreation

Woollahra is home to a fantastic selection of fine dining and eateries, including Damien Pignolet’s award winning Bistro Moncur. Centennial Park boasts a wealth of running, horse riding, cycling and rollerblading tracks for working off all the gourmet meals, and neighbouring Bondi is a great spot to surf.

Schools

There is a good selection of selection of schools here, with Woollahra Primary and Holy Cross both to be found in the suburb, and Scots, Ascham, Kincoppel and Waverly College all close by.
