Insuring your home

Protecting your prime asset is most important and should be looked at and taken very seriously. Your house represents many hard years of work and could be struck by fire, flood or burgled at an instant.

Losing your personal possessions to fire or theft is traumatising enough, without having a huge financial burden hanging over your head because of lack of insurance. Home insurance (in most circumstances) is at least able to protect against financial loss which would otherwise be suffered.

Please remember that the property and contents must be insured for the correct amount to ensure that you receive full compensation for the loss. To get a clear picture of the value of your contents, it is best to make a complete list of all items at least every few years.

You will be astounded that should you add up everything you own, just how much money it would cost to replace all these items. To access the value of your building structure, you are best off contacting your local builder to obtain a realistic replacement value.

When purchasing a home in NSW your insurance liability does not start until settlement, and since insurance is such a vital issue I strongly suggest that you organise this well in advance.
