Elizabeth Bay is a harbourside suburb in Eastern Sydney, located 3 kilometres east of the Sydney Central Business District and is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney.

History

Elizabeth Bay was named in honour of Governor Lachlan Macquarie’s wife, Elizabeth. Alexander Macleay (1767–1848), the Colonial Secretary of New South Wales, was granted 54 acres here in 1828 and commissioned architect John Verge (1788–1861) to build Elizabeth Bay House, a Regency style home that was completed in 1837. The grounds of the house have since been subdivided and converted into chic apartments and houses.

The suburb is ideally located for commuters, with the City just a short walk away through the Botanic Gardens. Alternatively, the city is just one stop away on the train from nearby Kings Cross. The area is also well served with regular bus services.
