Living in Mascot
Mascot is a suburb in south-eastern Sydney, located 7 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre of the City of Botany Bay. Mascot is on the north-west side of Botany Bay and is home to Sydney Airport.
History
The area was mainly farmland used for market gardening until 1904 when a racecourse was built here, named Ascot after the racecourse of the same name in Berkshire, England. However, residents subsequently wanted the area to have its own identity and the name Mascot was chosen in 1911.
Transport Links
The area is very well serviced by a large number of bus services travelling along Botany Road and Gardeners Road. Mascot Railway Station can be found in the residential area of the suburb, and is an underground station served by trains on the Airport Line.
Shopping and Recreation
A shopping strip can be found along Botany Road and the area around Mascot railway station also contains a few shops. Soccer and rugby can be found in the form of the Mascot Kings and the Mascot Jets- both teams call L’Estrange Park home. The Lakes Golf Club is also nearby, and is the venue for many large tournaments.
