Living in Greenwich
Greenwich is a suburb on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, located 7 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD, in the local government area of the Municipality of Lane Cove. The suburb occupies a peninsula on the northern side of Sydney Harbour, at the opening of the Lane Cove River. Greenwich is bounded by the Pacific Highway to the north, the North Shore Railway to the east, Lane Cove Golf Course to the west, and is predominantly surrounded by the waters of the river and harbour to the South.
History
The suburb's name is derived from its namesake Greenwich, by the banks of the Thames in London. The Paramatta River has often been referred to as "The Thames of the Antipodes", with many surrounding suburbs taking their names from those in London.
Transport Links
Greenwich is well serviced by both buses and ferries to the city and Sydney CBD. Greenwich ferry wharf provides access to the Inner Harbour ferry services, with ferry services to Circular Quay. A bus service from Greenwich Point runs to McMahons Point, Lane Cove and St Leonards. The closest train stations are at St Leonards and Wollstonecraft.
Shopping and Recreation
The local shopping centre has a village type atmosphere and features a range of retail outlets with shops, restaurants and cafes. The suburb also features harbour views, a few pockets of bushland, and a harbour swimming pool with shark net. Greenwich also boasts a variety of sporting and recreational facilities including sailing, cricket, soccer and netball, and a large selection of parks and the Greenwich Baths.
Schools and Institutions
The suburb is well situated for a variety of schools including pre-schools, primary schools and, in nearby North Sydney, both North Sydney Boy’s and Girl’s High schools.
