Living in St Leonards
St Leonards is a suburb on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, located 5 kilometres north-west of the Sydney CBD and lies across the local government areas of Municipality of Lane Cove, North Sydney Council and the City of Willoughby.
History
St Leonards was named after English statesman Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney of St Leonards. The name originally applied to the entire North Shore, between North Sydney and Gore Hill. When the North Shore’s first railway station opened here in 1890 the surrounding area became known by the same name.
Transport Links
St Leonards railway station is on the North Shore Line and the Northern Line of the City Rail network and provides the best access for public transport, taking only 15 minutes into the City. Services run every 5-10 minutes and Chatswood is only 5 minutes away. The Pacific Highway also runs through the suburb, providing excellent road links.
Shopping and Recreation
A strip of shops can be found running along the Pacific Highway, with the nearby Chatswood and Crows Nest also providing excellent shopping facilities. For an energetic outlet, St Leonards features a large indoor climbing centre and three gyms.
Schools and Institutions
The area is home to one of the largest TAFE sites in NSW, as well as being close to neighbouring Crows Nest and Chatswood for a larger range of schools.
