Living in Chatswood
Chatswood is a suburb on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, located 10 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district and is the administrative centre of the local government area of the City of Willoughby.
History
Residential settlement of Chatswood began in 1876 and grew with the installation of the North Shore railway line in 1890 and also increased with the opening of the Harbour Bridge in 1932.
Transport Links
Chatswood is served with excellent bus connections and is a major bus terminus. Buses operate along the Pacific Highway to the city and North Sydney and beyond. In Victoria Street you’ll find Chatswood Station with its fast rail link to the city. The train station is on the North Shore Line and the Northern Line of the CityRail network, with services running to the CBD, Hornsby, Gosford and Newcastle and other areas around Greater Sydney.
Shopping and Recreation
Chatswood is one of the North Shore’s major commercial and retail districts, with both Westfield Chatswood and the elegant Chatswood Chase, home to exclusive fashion, furnishings, food and supermarkets.The Melody Markets are held each Thursday in Chatswood Mall and feature food and craft stalls, and live music. 'Civic Place' which includes the administrative offices of the City of Willoughby will be redeveloped to provide retail, hotel, office space and arts facilities. Chatswood also hosts the annual Willoughby Spring Festival, one of the largest celebrations of modernity, prosperity and multiculturalism in the area.
Schools and Institutions
Chatswood is home to a selection of schools, both private and public, primary and secondary, and the large Royal North Shore Hospital is a mere 3km from the suburb.
