Living in Balgowlah

Balgowlah is a suburb of northern Sydney, located 12 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of Manly Council, in the Northern Beaches region.

History

The suburb, as an early European settlement, was known as ‘Little Manly’, but was renamed Balgowlah in 1832 after the aboriginal word meaning ‘north harbour’, its position in reference to Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour).

Transport Links

A number of frequent bus services run through the suburb to Manly, Warringah Mall and the City and CBD. Ferries can be caught from the Manly Wharf, with a normal ferry taking approximately 30 minutes, or try the faster JetCat service, taking only half the time to reach Circular Quay.

Shopping and Recreation

Balgowlah Shopping Centre and Warringah Mall provide an excellent choice for shoppers, while more sporting pursuits can be found in the form of Balgowlah Golf Course, kayaking in Middle Harbour and the many walking and jogging tracks of Sydney Harbour National Park or Garigal National Park.
