Living in Lugarno

Lugarno is a suburb in southern Sydney, located 23 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district in the local government area of the City of Hurstville and is part of the St George area.

History

Lugarno was named after Lake Lugano in Switzerland by surveyors Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell and William Govett in 1843, with an 'r' added for the suburb name. The area was heavily wooded until it was developed for residential dwellings in the 1960s, although large areas of bushland still remain here.

Transport Links

The area is well served by buses into the CBD and City and has good links to a large cycleway network.

Shopping and Recreation

Lugarno has two small shopping areas which serve all daily needs with a supermarket, chemists, hairdressers, cafes and restaurants. Gannons Park is a large park home to Lugarno Soccer, Evatt Park is home to baseball and cricket. Georges River National Park also provides open space for sporting or recreational use.
