Living in Carlton

Carlton is a suburb in southern Sydney, located 15 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the St George area. Carlton lies across the boundary of two local government areas, the Municipality of Kogarah and the City of Rockdale.

History

The area was originally heavily timbered and was part of a grant of 1,950 acres made to Captain John Townson in 1808. When the railway line to Hurstville was opened in 1884, large estates were subdivided and residents began moving in.

Transport Links

Carlton railway station is on the Illawarra line of the City Rail network and buses run through the suburb, with the Princes Highway providing excellent road links.

Shopping and Recreation

Carlton’s main shopping centre is located on both sides of Carlton railway station, on Railway Parade and Carlton Parade. Commercial developments are also found along the Princes Highway. Jubilee Oval, Kogarah Park, Tinsdale Reserve, Anglo Square Park and Agusta Park can all be found here.
