Living in Sandringham

Sandringham is a suburb in southern Sydney, located 18 kilometres south of the Sydney central business district and is part of the St George area. Sandringham is in the local government area of the City of Rockdale.

History

Sandringham was originally known as Strippers Point in the 1830s, from the local occupation of tree-felling and bark-stripping, until William Rust built the Prince of Wales Hotel here. As an ardent royalist, it is thought he chose the name to honour Edward VII, the Prince of Wales who in 1872 was also building a royal residence at Sandringham, in Norfolk, England.

The area is served by buses and is a short distance to the rail links of nearby Rockdale.

Shopping and Recreation

A small group of shops is located at the intersection of Clareville Avenue and Russell Avenue and includes Sans Souci Library, grocery shop, liquor shop, chemist, hairdresser, take-away shops and a café. There are many parks and reserves here in which to walk, jog or cycle and Sandringham Bay and Sandringham Baths can also be found here, as well as the Georges River Sailing Club.
