History

The suburb, as an early European settlement, was known as ‘Little Manly’, but was renamed Balgowlah in 1832 after the aboriginal word meaning ‘north harbour’, its position in reference to Port Jackson (Sydney Harbour).

Balgowlah Shopping Centre and Warringah Mall provide an excellent choice for shoppers, while more sporting pursuits can be found in the form of Balgowlah Golf Course, kayaking in Middle Harbour and the many walking and jogging tracks of Sydney Harbour National Park or Garigal National Park.

Schools

Balgowlah is home to Balgowlah Heights Primary School and Balgowlah Boys High School, with Manly North and Manly West Public Schools not far away.
