Living in Centennial Park
Centennial Park is a large public, urban park that occupies 220 hectares in the Eastern Suburbs of Sydney, 4 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the City of Randwick. There is a small residential suburb, on the western fringe of the parkland, which is part of the local government area of the City of Sydney.
History
In January 1888, the director of the Botanical Gardens, Charles Moore, enlisted hundreds of unemployed men to shape a large area of swampland and scrub into the park we see today. The park was dedicated to the people of NSW, and the inauguration of the Commonwealth took place here in 19021.
Transport Link
Centennial Park is located between the CBD and the Eastern Beaches, with the City less than 5 minutes by car. Bus services are good here, with services from Circular Quay to Bondi stopping here, and buses to Bondi Junction Railway Station.
Shopping and Recreation
Nearby Paddington is home to the wealth of shops on Oxford Street, with Bondi Junction and the City also close at hand for shoppers. The park is ever popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists, and holds Moonlight Cinema evenings in summer. The Sydney Cricket Ground and Football Stadium are nearby, as is the famous Randwick Racecourse.
Schools
The area surrounding Centennial Park provides an enormous selection of public and private primary and secondary schools, as well as pre-schools and childcare facilities. The University of New South Wales is close by.
