Living in Collaroy

Collaroy is a suburb in northern Sydney, located 20 kilometres north-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Warringah Council and part of the Northern Beaches region. Collaroy Plateau is a locality in the western part of the suburb.

History

The word Collaroy is aboriginal for ‘big reeds’ although the suburb was originally part of Narrabeen. It was renamed after the collier S.S. Collaroy ran aground on the beach in 1881 during a storm. Most of Collaroy’s development has occurred since the mid twentieth century, and seen the suburb turn from a small farming area into a desirable, beachside residential area.

Transport Links

Nearby Manly provides the famous ferry service into Circular Quay, or commuters can catch one of the many buses running through the suburb into the City. Pittwater road runs through Collaroy, linking the suburb with Palm Beach to the north and Manly to the south.

Shopping and Recreation

Collaroy has a selection of local shops and cafes, as well as surf shops and newsagents located opposite the beach. The larger range of shops at Warringah Mall is a few minutes drive away. Narrabeen Lake and its reserve offers beautiful walking tracks and is also popular with cyclists, whilst kayakers can enjoy the calm waters. The famous Long Reef Golf Course can be found here, as well as the Long Reef Coastal Walk.
