Living in Newport

Newport is a suburb in northern Sydney, located 31 kilometres north of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of Pittwater Council, and is part of the Northern Beaches region.

History

The name of the suburb is derived from the area’s ‘new port’ which was built to allow cargo steamers carrying building materials, firewood and passengers into the area.

Transport Links

Newport is located at the northern end of Pittwater Road, a main arterial road on the Northern Beaches. This allows for excellent road links by both bus and car.

Recreation and Schools

Newport Beach is home to the Newport Arms Hotel, one of the favourite places for a family meal or drinks with friends on the Northern Beaches. The large terrace and hillside location provide excellent views over Pittwater and is often a destination for summer afternoons. Newport Beach popular with families, and the area is also home to several marinas and small shipyards. Newport Public School can be found here.
