Living in Paddington
Paddington is an inner-city, Eastern Suburb of Sydney, located 3 kilometres east of the Sydney central business district and lies across the local government areas of the City of Sydney and the Municipality of Woollahra. Paddington is located primarily on a northern slope, down which runs Oxford Street. Paddington is bordered to the west by Darlinghurst, to the east by Centennial Park and Woollahra, to the north by Edgecliff and Kings Cross and to the south by Moore Park.
History
Paddington was named after the borough in London, by entrepreneur and gin distiller Robert Cooper, who built his estate, ‘Juniper Hall’ in the 1820s there. The suburb grew and became heavily populated, until Sydney’s gentry moved in and the area then became a centre for a large arts community in the 1960s.
Transport Links
There is an excellent bus service running from Bondi Junction to the CBD along Oxford Street, with another regular service to Circular Quay.
Shopping and Recreation
Oxford Street is widely recognised as Sydney’s most trendy shopping area with a vast selection of fashion, homewares, books, antiques and food shops to be found. Trumper Park is used for football and cricket, and Paddington is a hub of cafes, restaurants and pubs to suit all tastes.
Schools
Glenmore Road Public, Paddington Public School, Sydney Grammar Junior School are located in Paddington, and some of Sydney’s best schools are a short drive away in neighbouring suburbs.
