Phillip Bay is a suburb in south-eastern Sydney, located 13 kilometres south-east of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the City of Randwick.

History

The First Fleet ship HMS Supply carrying Captain Arthur Phillip arrived in Botany Bay on 18th January 1788 and the anchorage was named “Phillip Bay”. Examination of the immediate vicinity by Phillip concluded the area ‘unsuitable for habitation’, and subsequently the coast was explored northwards, eventually finding Port Jackson. The fleet was then relocated to what became Sydney Cove.

Transport Links

The area has good road access being close to Anzac Parade into the City, and Bunnerong Road, heading up to nearby Kingsford. Bus services also run in this area to the City and CBD.

Recreation and Schools

Yarra Bay is a popular and beautiful spot for beach goers and families. The area along Yarra Bay is home to a selection of recreational areas, and the area is close to Bicentennial Park. Yarra Bay Sailing Club can also be found here, as can La Perouse Primary School. A large selection of schools and shopping facilities can be found in Maroubra and Matraville.
