Living in Putney

Putney is a suburb of Sydney, located 12 kilometres west-northwest of the Sydney central business district on the northern bank of the Parramatta River. Its local government area is the City of Ryde.

History

The suburb's name is derived from its namesake Putney on the River Thames in London. Parramatta River had been known as the 'Thames of the Antipodes' and other nearby suburbs were also named after Thames localities of Greenwich, Woolwich and Henley.

Transport Links

The Kissing Point ferry wharf, located in the suburb, provides access to the Parramatta River ferry services, with a 40-minute ferry service to Circular Quay. Meadowbank railway station is located beyond the suburb's northwestern boundary. The area is also well served by buses.

Shopping and Recreation

There is a local shopping area with shops to meet daily needs, including a post office and restaurants. There is also a sporting field and a number of parks for recreation.
