Rozelle is a suburb in the inner west of Sydney, located 4 kilometres west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Municipality of Leichhardt.

History

The name Rozelle is believed to orignate from the abundance of parrots in the area called ‘Rose Hill’ parrots. The name was later shortened to ‘rose-hillers’, ‘rosella’ and then ‘rozelle’. The land was originally part of a grant given to surgeon Dr William Balmain in 1800, and was known as Balmain West until the early 1900s when the suburb grew.

Bus services and ferries at Circular Quay are easily accessible from Rozelle, and the suburb is less than a 10 minute drive away from the CBD in non peak hours.

Shopping and Recreation

Darling Street provides Rozelle with a chic shopping hub of clothing, books, cafes and the Rozelle market held every Saturday and Sunday is popular too. Easton Park and King George Park are popular with walkers, joggers and cyclists.

Schools

Balmain High School and Rozelle Primary School can both be found in the area.
