Sydenham is a small suburb in the inner-west of Sydney, located 8 kilometres south of Sydney central business district and is part of the local government area of Marrickville Council.

History

Sydenham developed after the Illawarra line came through the area to Hurstville in the late 1800s. It was named after Sydenham, a suburb of London, similar for its close proximity to the city and a railway junction. The suburb developed with the opening of a post office in 1899.

Transport Links

Sydnenham Railway Station is a junction between the Bankstown, Illawarra and East Hills lines of the CityRail network and provides residents with quick access to the City and CBD.

Shopping, Recreation and Schools

There is a small cluster of shops by the railway station, with most people heading down to the Marrickville Metro Shopping Centre nearby for all their shopping needs. Sydnenham Green is home to quirky, oversized living room furniture sculptures, paying homage to the residential homes which used to stand on the land. Nearby Marrickville and Tempe provide a good selection of restaurants and schools.
