SHOULD I RENOVATE MYSELF
It is assumed that a normal citizen planning on renovating their own home can save up to 40% on renovation costs. Please remember that it is illegal to attempt any electrical or plumbing work without the appropriate license, and in your costs please factor in your time at an hourly rate.
Recognise what you can comfortably do at a high standard, because we are talking about your primary asset. This might included flooring, painting and some tiling. Things like brickwork, plastering and fitting plasterboard walls should all be left to the experts.
Please remember that when the GST comes in, building materials are going to be more expensive and the later you leave things the harder it will be to get a tradesman.
To help you decide if you're the renovating type, here are some basic questions to ask yourself.
- Do you have the necessary tools and equipment to perform the task to a high standard?
- Do you have the leisure time required to finish a job in a reasonable time frame, without having the house in a total mess?
- Are you skilled in the area you are about to embark on? Please remember there are many courses available to you, books and building centres for advice.
- Plan on taking two to three times as long as a qualified tradesman would, and make sure that when you are hiring tradesman that they are fully insured.
