Living in Sydney
The City of Sydney encompasses the Sydney Central Business District and surrounding inner-city suburbs. Although thought of mainly for business sky-scrapers, the City of Sydney also provides a pleasant residential space.
History
Sydney was named after Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney, after English admiral Arthur Phillip arrived with the First Fleet in 1788. The end of the 19th century saw rapid urban development, and today Sydney is Australia’s most populous city, with a population of about 4.5 million, and has recently been voted as the world’s 10th best city for quality of living.
Transport Links
Sydney is well served by public transport, with buses and trains being amongst the fastest ways to get around the city. For those living here, the CBD is but a short walk away, and Circular Quay is convenient for ferry services, the bus depot and the train station, allowing easy transport across the City and beyond.
Recreation
Sydney caters to all tastes, ages and budgets, from dinner and a spectacular show at the Opera House or Sydney Conservatorium of Music, to a pub lunch and a walk around the Botanical Gardens. A large number of parks and open spaces are available for walking, jogging or cycling, as well as a variety of sports including soccer, rugby and cricket.
Schools
The area is home to some of Australia’s most prominent educational facilities, including the University of Sydney, four TAFE institutes, as well as a large number of exclusive, selective schools. Schools can be found here to suit every age, ability and denomination.
