Living in Northwood
Northwood is a suburb on the Lower North Shore of Sydney, located 8 kilometres north-west of the Sydney central business district, in the local government area of the Municipality of Lane Cove. Northwood sits on the northern side of the Lane Cove River between Woodford Bay and Gore Creek.
History
Northwood is named after Northwood House, designed by Edmund Blacket (1817-1883) and built by Mrs Jane Davey in 1878. The name was chosen because it is descriptive of its location, a woodland area in the north. Mrs Davey also built a ferry at her own expense, so that her family could travel to the city by ferry. A number of prominent families have owned Northwood House since then, and during the Second World War, it was used to provide accommodation for mentally handicapped children.
Transport Links
The suburb is well serviced with a bus route and the Northwood ferry wharf enables access to the Inner Harbour Ferry service, popular for those commuting to the CBD to Circular Quay. Nearby St. Leonards has good rail links to the City and beyond.
Shopping and Recreation
Northwood is well situated for the excellent shopping facilities at nearby Lane Cove, North Sydney and Crows Nest. The suburb also boasts plenty of bushland and recreational space including beautiful waterfront reserves and the golf course and tennis courts of River Road are only a short walk away.
Schools
Nearby Lane Cove, Greenwich and Hunter Hill boast a fantastic selection of state schools, whilst North Sydney and Riverview are home to well known private schools in the area.
