Living in Riverwood

Riverwood is a suburb in southern Sydney, located 18 kilometres south-west of the Sydney central business district and is part of the St George area. Riverwood is split between the local government areas of the City of Hurstville and the City of Canterbury.

History

The area was originally known as Herne Bay and comprised small land grants between 30 and 80 acres, although it was subdivided in 1919 and subsequently redeveloped during World War II when a large hospital was set up here to treat soldiers. The name was changed to Riverwood in 1957 with hopes to give a fresh image to the area.

Transport Links

Riverwood railway station is on the East Hills line of the City Rail network and the area is well service by buses.

Shopping, Recreation and Schools

The main shopping centre is located near the railway station, and contains supermarkets and speciality shops. There is also the Riverwood Library, Riverwood Community Centre, Club Rivers and the Australian Air League Riverwood Squadron Hall. Hannan Road Public School can also be found here.
